Even this day my camera was put away, I wanted to be in the moment, but I remembered to use my phone a few times anyway, so I have something to show you from this magical day!
It was a Christmas Day with english traditions in a mix with personal adjustments. It all was lovely and we had a fabulous day. It started at 9 am in Scooby, Karen & Myles´s motorhome.
Morning in the motorhome
When we knocked on the door Myles came out and wanted to show us something on the other side of their home. And there, next to our sign for Santa ”Santa please stop here” there were two stockings full with gifts! We brought them inside where Karen had prepared a beautiful and very tasteful breakfast.
Smoothie with raspberries and chia seeds topped with kiwi, lime, avocado and spinach. Red and green Christmas colours and super fresh. A good start! Then we got a plate with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. On a toast for the guys but me and Karen got avocado instead. Such a good breakfast, the stomach got what it needed to be prepared for what was coming…
While drinking a glass of Bucks Fizz, which is orange juice and Prosecco, we opened the gifts we got in the stockings. In my I found for example marmelade, a sewing pattern for making my own bag, different good stuff for the garden, vanilla pods and labels for my preserved jars. In the stockings there also were nuts, a clementine and a couple of candy canes which is traditional in the UK.
A toast in the house
At 11 we met inside our house and K & M filled our glasses with almond liqueur (Disaronno, my favourite) or portwine and then we raised the glasses in a greeting to those we miss and thinking about. A very nice tradition I might continue.
A walk & relaxing
Before they started the preparations for the Christmas Day Dinner we went for a walk. I had made a couple of bags with our homemade candy, so we passed by our closest neighbours and gave them a candy gift and hugs as a Christmas greeting.
Then we continued our walk to the village and saw that they had a fire going on the road, for an evening gathering amongst friends and family. Nice to snuggle up around a warm fire!
When we came home I spent some time with the cats, took a shower and then sat in the sofa and crotcheted while our friends prepared the food, using both our kitchen and their own in the motorhome.
The Christmas Day Dinner
I am amazed how much food they had, remember they live full-time in a motorhome with a small fridge, almost no freezer and very limited storage. But still they had prepared so much delicious food!
When we sat down there were Christmas Crackers on the table, each containing a paper hat, a joke and a gift. Both me and Roger got friends-bracelets!
Then we ate a starter of avocado and salmon mousse with tomatoes and cucumber. After that we could pick what we wanted from a generous buffet:
- Roasted Turkey with garlic stuffing
- Gluten-free garlic stuffing as balls
- Pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped with bacon)
- Vegetarian Pigs in blankets
- Carrots Foriestièrre (mushrooms, carrots and garlic cooked in vegetable stock)
- Leeks in cheese sauce
- Leeks, cabbage and pea mix
- Aubergine with feta topping
- Mushrooms with goat cheese
- Roasted potatoes
- Homemade gravy
- Homemade vegetarian gravy
- Roasted brussels sprouts with olive oil and cheese
This dinner was one of the best in a long time and the Rioja wine, Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, they served, now is on one of my favourites!
Their effort and consideration of making food we both would appreciate, adjusted to our tastebuds and preferences, was so thoughtful and made us feel very special and loved.
Even if we where very full after all enjoyable food, we also ate Christmas Pudding with brandy custard and mince pies as dessert, and mine was of course without gluten. We are very grateful for the opportunity to taste that famous dessert, even if it not was to our taste.
Talk & movie
When the dishes was made and we all sat down again I asked if they were up for a challenge. I wanted to see if we could find anything we did not agree upon. We have similar values and opinions in everything we talk about and I thought we could explore a bit broader. But even if we had controversial subjects on the table we finally had to give up. We couldn´t find anything we disagree about.
Then we watched a movie on Netflix, about IVF – a subject we might discuss next time, for when the movie ended, we all wanted to crawl to bed!
We are filled with gratitude for these memorable days!
